Sam Burton with new single I don’t blame you

Posted On May 24, 2023

Dear Departed is the second album from US singer Sam Burton, and it arose from a time of rebirth.

In the last few years, the singer says that he just started over. For a while he abandoned the life he’d built in LA to return to Utah where he grew up, then holing up in a cabin on a rural northern California farm. Sam describes the album as being wracked with pain and loss, and he spends much of the time saying goodbye to a version of himself.

After “Maria” and “Long Way Around”, “I Don’t Blame You” is the third single taken from Los Angeles-based singer Sam Burton’s new album Dear Departed, out on July 14, 2023 through Partisan Records (Idles, Fontaines D.C., PJ Harvey…).

With production from Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, Margo Price), Burton achieves a sound that never descends into retro pastiche, but rather becomes an evocative echo, a dream of the past.

Sam Burton talks about his new track and where it comes from:

This song was one that stuck out to me when I was writing the songs for this record. I felt like I found a hypnotic rhythm that transported me and it felt inspired by the landscape that I was staying in. I started to see imagery in my mind and I tried to capture the spirit of it. This song brings me back to that place in Northern California and makes me see the forest and the rivers. I think it’s so important for a writer to have an inner world they can go back to to reconnect with themselves and this song revealed that place to me..
