Berlin Gears Up for 12th Annual Music Video Awards Spectacle

The city of Berlin is buzzing with excitement as the 12th edition of the esteemed Berlin Music Video Awards (BMVA) approaches. Taking place from June 12th to 14th, 2024, the iconic Club Gretchen will play host to this international celebration of music video artistry.

Renowned for its ability to spotlight emerging talent before they hit the mainstream, the BMVA prides itself on fostering a rioutous competition between established and up-and-coming artists, filmmakers, and production companies. True to its “International, independent, and unleashed” motto, the festival embodies the diversity and inclusivity that Berlin is famous for, curating an eclectic selection of videos spanning various genres, languages, and themes.

This year’s nominees will vie for coveted awards across 14 categories, including Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Low Budget, as well as the prestigious Best Music Video and Best Production Company accolades. The festival has seen an outstanding number of attendance confirmations from nominees, boasting representatives from global superstars like Megan Thee Stallion, Davido, Pedro Sampaio, and Khalid. Remarkably, a staggering 85% of this year’s nominees hail from international waters, a testament to the BMVA’s ever-growing global reach.

But of course the local scene is not overlooked, with notable German nominees and filmmakers from acts like Kalte Liebe, Klaus Layer, and Alligatoah already confirmed to attend. Artists like Masstor, Olly Alexander, and Manizha are among the emerging talents to watch out for, further contributing to the diverse pool of attendees and creating a truly unique networking opportunity.

A look at the BMVA 2023

The BMVA’s media partners, including Kaltblut, Siegessäule, and Hennesy, are poised to amplify the festival’s impact and ensure brilliant exposure for the winners.

Live performances will punctuate the awards festivities, featuring acts like the winner of The Voice of Germany, Claudia Santoso, and established artists such as Panterah from Paris and Malina Scar from Moscow. Local performers like Thunder Bae, Noanne, Siie, Ljung, Gennre, and Supermodel will also grace the stage, while non-stop outdoor DJ sets will keep the energy high throughout the program, headlined by DJ Jacques from Paris and backed by international and local talents.

The program promises a wealth of activities, workshops, and celebrations, including an ‘AI Conference’ led by industry expert Yonatan Dor, exploring the convergence of artificial intelligence and music videos. Festival founder Aviel Silook has hinted at a groundbreaking trend: the surge of AI-created submissions, suggesting a dedicated category for AI videos might be introduced by 2025.

This year’s esteemed jury panel comprises over 30 international industry experts, including veteran commercial and music video director Justin Izumi, multidisciplinary artist Thomas Götz von Aust, experienced music video producer Frank Hoffmann, cinematographer and director Phillip Kaminiak, and Swedish fashion designer Lena Quist. Notably, Jan Burda, known for producing VFX for Game of Thrones, returns to the jury panel, and Robert Royal, a porn star and visual artist, is set to bring his unique perspective.

Attendees are encouraged to embrace the festival’s spirit by dressing in freaky, kinky, and bizarre attire on June 13th, and donning red-carpet elegance for the final day’s awards ceremony, enhancing the overall experience and networking opportunities.

Capping off this exceptional event is an unforgettable after-party at the legendary KitKat Club, making the Berlin Music Video Awards a must-attend destination for creatives out for a unique and hardcore immersive experience.
