Having been a fan of Bookie Baker for years, ever since coming across their brilliant pseudo-western video for single Autumn Wind, we’re delighted to be able to premiere their brand new video single “The Ideal Expiration of a Stubborn Man”.

The duo of Irishman, Caolan O’Neill-Forde and Canadian, Alex Montyro have been based in Prague for the last years during which they have established themselves as talented and assured carriers of the torch of indie folk and americana; but not the hipster variety or the grew-up-in-Clacton variety; their sound, the timbre of their voices, the passion of their playing, all allude to an authenticity that’s all too rare these days.

The collaboration began after Montyro opened a music venue in the Liaoning province of China and O’Neill-Forde wandered in looking for musical compatriots in a faraway land. Soon packing in large crowds to the ire of local communist party officials, the duo found themselves enduring multiple interrogations by local police after an arrest during a live performance. Released after being warned to never play music in the country again, they opened a map and considered options across the globe. One city became a clear standout due to its thriving renaissance of creativity, culture and commerce: Prague.

Alex Montyro tells the moving true story of two deaths in the family and the different ways of dealing with them that directly inspired the song: of a grandfather dying in the middle of the bleak Canadian winter, and the funeral that followed it being sad and bleak in its own way. And then of a favoured uncle a few months later; but the funeral that followed this death instead took place in the summer and became a roaring celebration of the man’s life.”

The story of the song is that the grim reaper comes in the bleak midwinter to take a dying man away and he pleads with Death to wait a few months so that he can leave the earth in a more fitting manner.

This is a live video version of the song; the studio track will come out as a single in December.
