On 30 October 2026, Brooklyn indie rock band DIIV will release their fifth studio album, ZIRP!, through Fantasy Recordings. The record is produced by A. G. Cook, the British producer and PC Music founder known for his work with Charli XCX and Caroline Polachek. It is one of the most surprising indie releases of the week.
DIIV first became known for their dreamy, guitar heavy sound. Albums such as Oshin and Is the Is Are helped define their place in the modern shoegaze and dream pop scene. With ZIRP!, however, the band moves in a new direction. They keep their noisy guitars and emotional intensity, but add electronic textures, pop structures and a sharper, more playful energy.
What ZIRP! Means
The title refers to zero interest rate policies. For DIIV, it represents a world shaped by failed startups, financial speculation and people reduced to isolated “users”. The album expands on the themes of their previous record, Frog in Boiling Water, but does so with a new sense of lightness.
This contrast gives ZIRP! its character. The music often sounds bright, fast and energetic, while the lyrics examine anxiety, disillusionment and life in a society that feels unstable. DIIV do not offer simple comfort. Instead, they turn confusion into rhythm, distortion and melody.
A. G. Cook Changes the Sound
A. G. Cook is an unusual choice for a guitar band, but the collaboration makes sense. Cook did not simply remix DIIV’s demos. He helped the group rebuild their material from the ground up. At the same time, he preserved the energy of their live performances.
The result is an album that feels familiar and strange at the same time. Guitars, drums and atmospheric layers are still there. But warped synths, processed vocals and moments close to glitch pop and hyperpop now sit beside them. On “Trillions”, for example, Cook uses Auto-Tune to create distance between the voice and the listener. The effect makes the song feel modern, unstable and emotionally detached.
“The Fountain” Opens a New Chapter
The album opens with “The Fountain”, its lead single. The track is explosive, melodic and restless. It introduces the new version of DIIV without completely abandoning their earlier identity. The guitars still matter, but the song feels more direct and immediate than much of their earlier work.
Other tracks continue this transformation. “Kid” combines soft drums and wavering synths before a sharp guitar line breaks through the atmosphere. “Evangelizer” is one of the album’s most reflective moments. It questions passivity and inaction, while singer Zachary Cole Smith admits his own limitations.
An Album for a Strange Moment
ZIRP! feels timely because it captures a mood shared by many people today. The world seems to move faster than anyone can process. Technology promises connection but often creates isolation. Economic systems feel unstable. Everyday life can feel both overwhelming and strangely empty.
DIIV respond not with quiet resignation, but with movement. Their new songs are restless, colourful and full of friction. They suggest that even in a broken world, music can become a way to feel awake.
ZIRP! will be released on 30 October 2026 through Fantasy Recordings. It is a bold, restless and surprisingly fun album from a band that refuses to stay in one place.
